Jamie Stuart’s achievements in battle are legendary. With good fortune and brave initiative, he is recognised as a hero. But what made him, what makes anyone, a hero? The novel, based on real events, presents the example of a young soldier with all his life before him, who repeatedly lays his own life on the line, doing so neither to set nor to follow the example of others. It was just what you did.

It’s a what-can-happen-next story of bravado. The heroic escapades of Jamie descriptively tell how he and the men about him, in action, without question think first not of themselves. Readers are asked if the bravery was foolhardy or meritorious, and to question what they might have done.

Toy Soldier is fiction recounting events that did happen, some elsewhere than suggested, and at different times, which are brought together in one historical sequence. The players in this Game of Soldiers are real, but as with the events they have been renamed and disguised to confound recognition. All were known to the author.
