In 1941, Betty Webb left a domestic science course to volunteer for the Auxilliary Territorial Service (ATS). Her journey would take her to Bletchley Park, the nerve centre of the Allied code-breaking during the war.
Her work involved registering intelligence from German police forces, some of it including important information on the Holocaust.
Towards the end of the war in Europe, Betty moved to the Japanese Section to paraphrase deciphered messages. She then worked at the Pentagon in Washington DC decoding Japanese cyphers.
In 2015, Betty was awarded an MBE and the Order of Légion d’Honneur for her work.
